About 1982 I watched Jerry Falwell on The Old Gospel Hour, but only because I’d heard this show would be…..unusual. It was.

Reagan had been in office a couple years, and wanted to boost America’s nuclear “strategy”. And Mr’s Farwell’s position on world-ending nuclear annihilation? He wanted everyone watching to support it, because nuclear war would signal the return of Jesus. That show was about Christians supporting the end of all humanity. (I still have the booklet and cassette tapes of the show, available for a small donation.)

And recently the position on climate change seems to be “if it’s real, and God wants to fix it “he” will.” But I think the reality is no different from supporting the end of humanity in the early 80s. After all, if “problems” could be fixed in such a manner, why would the Christian solution to abortion be the murder of abortion doctors? Surely changing the wording in a nation’s laws is easier than for God than changing every aspect of an entire planet, presumably by a factor of billions…isn’t it?

But of course, only we progressives and other “bad people” will be the victims of the end of times, and every Christian knows we really don’t count.
