As a white southerner who currently does not own guns (due to being just too old and tired, and lacking family to protect), the difference between Black and white gun ownership seems distressingly simple:
Black America appears to me to buy guns with a focus on protection. White Americans seem to me (and I've seen hundreds) to own guns out of a sense of aggression. Or perhaps even worse, toys for playing out their twisted fantasies.
While the gunfire I regularly hear might make one think all the south is one big shooting range, this past Sunday is the first time I can recall hearing the sound of an assault rifle. While I'd like to think this piece I wrote weeks prior to November's election was now a victim of time, I suspect it's far from being the only victim America now expects:
