As I stated, Ms. Obama is my “praise to the heavens” favorite, as she is yours.
I simply don’t acknowledge that her admittedly vast accomplishments (as I said in my comment, she has almost certainly done more than any First Lady to ever live) diminish Ms. Carter’s in any way. When she was a First Lady was a more difficult time for women to express a voice, and she faced her own battles as well. While not beginning to compare to President Obama’s trials, President Carter also faced tremendous unfair criticism, leading to his single term.
I believe that greatness has many measurements, and every precedent for accomplishment should be recognized on its own, rather than diminished. I would find it tragic indeed, if a First Lady came along eventually that would have accomplishments so overwhelming (however unlikely that might seem) as to make it seem that Ms. Obama’s no longer carried value for the time in which she lived.
