As someone who first read LotR >50 years ago, my first and foremost question about the movie is:
At what point did Aragorn become the focus of not only the action, but the romance (romance?) and the dialog? (Hell, everything.)
I've yet to see del Toro fail (well, once maybe, but that wasn't really his fault. Besides The Devil's Backbone more than made up for it), and it was a sad day when I heard At the Mountains of Madness was not to be. (The very though of del Toro and Lovecraft in the same project!)
