I guess the question might be, "Who do we write for?"

I don't make a cent on Medium (by choice.) I do it because I enjoy it, and benefit. Sure, I've seen article that I thought were similar, yet far smaller than things I've written. And yes, mine were largely ignored...but not by me. (Yet, it IS welcome to be appreciated, but it changes my writing when I write for others.)

They are the only children I'll ever have, and I love and cherish them. But that's just me.
