I recall some years ago hearing a story on NPR about a slave cemetery discovered in Manhattan. Among the dead was a child who had died from overwork. His body ruined, his spine crushed due to the extreme and unreasonable amount of work he had been forced to endure……at four-years old.
A child died of overwork in order to make some heartless and soulless person a few dollars. And then at four-years old he was essentially discarded, to only be regarded, one presumes, by those who cared about him (and likely at great personal cost.)
The point of this tragedy may well be the age and circumstances of this child. But at what point do we consider the circumstances of any such graves, or deaths, or people, to be of even slightly lesser meaning? Lesser value? Less grounds for honor or remembrance?
Thank you for this. Thank you to those who remember.
