I think that in reality, they are saying that they have been TOLD to believe these things, not that they believe them based on any evidence.

As my post mentions, they are told that not thinking at all is best...

(Just saw gas @ $2.99 in town, but my guess? They won't believe it, even if they see it themselves.)
