In the early/mid 50s, the same thing happened with comic books. A scapegoat was also need then, and they found one.

They (presumably the same "they") asked some number of what were then termed "juvenile delinquents" if they read comic books. Since most young people of the time did, and statistically most military personnel did as well (and had at least since WWII), the verdict was that violent and suggestive comics caused crime.

They got everything they wanted.

Even today censorship in comics is a serious concern for both constitutionalists and those of who are us comic fans.
