My great-grandfather was once called before a "church court" for the unspeakable act of curing tobacco on a Sunday.

That was (then) the predominantly passive act of burning a fire in a special vertically-built barn for the purpose of drying hanging tobacco tied to sticks. Had he not done it, the entire barn-full would have been lost to rot and mold, and few people in the rural south could have survived such a loss.

Family history doesn't offer the result of the trial, but it would have happened about the time the KKK was ramping up here in South Carolina, the state that began America's Civil War.

Coincidence? Not likely....

(I'm not aware of any restrictions the church placed on the hating and lynching of Black people on Sunday, or any other day.)

Dan, you make my world far more interesting, and I thank you sincerely.
