And of course, "authorities" includes powerful evangelicals. Jerry Falwell was calling for Reagan to ramp up nuclear armament since about 1981, stating very clearly that he hoped it would trigger Armageddon. Christians could then continue to ignore issues involving the destruction of humanity.

Exactly that level of insanity still exists, perhaps to an even greater degree. I suspect they would be just as happy for the Earth to expire to climate chaos as any other reason.
