After the election I took several months, so I returned to gaming, where no one gives two shirts about politics, or how many innocent people have died. (NOT as therapeutic as it may sound. And hardly the place to go to get one's ego in check.)

I'll have to check on the avatar issue. I don't remember a change, but Medium has been a bit screwy lately. In a comment to James Finn (currently lost to me) I commented on how claps lost all meaning (which he confirmed) and the numbers of followers can vary by hundreds. Perhaps avatars are similarly affected. For a bit it was Chiquita, then a BLM t-shirt design. (Chiquita was a gift, found on the second trip to the shelter during a critical time. She has both saved and (hopefully) redeemed me. We are unapologetic BFFs.

I wish you every possible success and happiness, but as you say you're not quite finished with Medium (for now), I'll expect we'll "type" again.
