What Is “Woke”, and How Can We Stop It Before Permanent Damage Occurs?!

Obviously the GOP cure for “wokeness” is eternal sleep.

There is substantial confusion these days in much of the world about the term “woke”. While to be woke from sleep seems perfectly normal, and something virtually everyone does at least once per day, apparently being woke/awake to reality is a very bad thing indeed. (Depending, of course, on who you ask.) But clearly, using the most standard definition, being aware of and empathetic to the lives, concerns and difficulties of people who do not have almost exactly the same features, coloring, hair, ideas, geography, loves, wealth, beliefs and abilities as we individually have, is (at least to many people), at best unforgivable and at worst, an offense worth killing over.

This is especially true in the Christian nation of America where such violence happens on a daily basis. As of this Thanksgiving weekend, “gun-toting pro-life Christian America” has joyfully presided over 600 mass-killings in 2022, with the entire month of December still fully available. In theory, December is a short month statistically due to the traditional day off from mass-killing to celebrate the blessed birth of Jesus. (DISCLAIMER: I am not Christian, or a member of any organized religion.)

But to return to the topic…..

For those of you who may be like I am and are still very confused about exactly what constitutes “woke”, I think I think I have an answer, and will provide that answer to the best of my ability in the form of various woke expressions often used in conversation, as well as from media. As we examine this intentionally (in the interest of time) brief list, perhaps it might be worthwhile to try to understand just exactly how terribly offensive certain statements we make both thoughtlessly and regularly can seem to those unable to consider life before their most recent “sleep” mere hours ago, or the possibilities of what may lie beyond their next sleep, scant hours away:

“Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also. Give to everyone who begs from you.

“Judge not, that ye be not judged.

“Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

“Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

“Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.”

Obviously, these simple phrases indicate that we should feel empathy for those who suffer, and if we can ease their suffering, it is the obligation of every human being to attempt to do so, and to be just as all-around giving and caring at all times. To many, this is the greatest foolishness conceivable, and the fact that it was spoken by Jesus, and not Trump, makes all the difference possible. Can those of us who say such things not see the great pain such phrases as “turn the other cheek” can cause those only able to see life one day at a time, and lacking in any sense of personal responsibility? Those who only feel bigger when standing atop others, and who believe that suffering in the lives of anyone not just like them should be the norm, no matter what some water-walking, raise-the-dead Jewish guy may have said to a crowd on some “mount” 2,000 years ago.

And if it may seem that I’ve omitted the MOST “woke” phrase currently in contemporary use, rest assured I have not:

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

I ask you kind and patient readers one and all if you can possibly come up with a more offensively woke statement than this one, which makes the assumption that all people are equally created by God, and therefore are deserving of equal love and concern from all other of God’s creations, regardless of how non-rich or non-white they have decided to be. Obviously, this statement needs to be removed from common discourse, as to presume all people to be equal is exceptionally hurtful to those who see their own progress happening not through personal accomplishment, but by degrading all others who have, do, or might have suffered unjustly, or may accomplish greatness if such compassion for others ever becomes the norm in society, as Jesus taught should be the reality.

Hopefully both the Golden Rule and the Sermon on the Mount can be removed from the Bible quickly enough to not offend those few who refuse to acknowledge anything from the lips of Jesus unless Trump said it first. Most censorship happening in America occurs quite quickly these days, and I see this as no exception. Obviously, there will need to be a specific “American Bible” (with a facsimile Trump signature at extra cost) so those reading the Woke Bible may be identified in public, and arrested before they read any of it aloud.

It may just be easier to get rid of the whole Bible. For all its violence and devastation, the concepts of love, compassion and understanding do tend to sneak in from time to time, and that clearly will not do.
