Yesterday I was talking with the washing machine repairman who was being paid $100 to tell my parents (combined age of 186, for which, despite being 100% permanently disabled for decades, I am sole caretaker) that we needed to spend about $1000 to replace it, a month after I spent about the same amount to repair our heat pump:

"Life is not kind. It's fair, but not kind."
